P-BLOT named one of the world’s leading innovations supporting learner agency and meaningful engagement
We’re proud to share that Longworth Education has been recognised in the 2024 HundrED Spotlight on Child-Centred Learning, a global initiative that celebrates education innovations that put learners at the heart of teaching and learning.
Our Play-Based Learning Observation Tool (P-BLOT) was selected as one of the top 10 innovations from around the world advancing child-centred practice in real and impactful ways.
This recognition is a testament to the passionate, evidence-informed work of educators across Aotearoa who believe in the power of play, relationships, and responsive teaching.
About the P-BLOT
The Play-Based Learning Observation Tool helps teachers reflect on and improve their practice in play-rich environments. It’s a practical tool grounded in developmental theory and classroom realities — designed by teachers, for teachers.
P-BLOT supports educators to:
Understand the rich learning that occurs during play
Connect observations to key learning outcomes
Strengthen professional conversations within teams
Make learning visible to whānau, leadership, and the wider school community
Importantly, it affirms the professionalism and pedagogical skill required to facilitate powerful play-based learning — something too often misunderstood or undervalued in school settings.
About the HundrED Spotlight
HundrED is a Finland-based global non-profit that identifies and amplifies education innovations with the potential to create lasting impact. The 2024 Spotlight on Child-Centred Learning was conducted in collaboration with the Jacobs Foundation and experts from around the world.
Innovations were selected based on:
Impact: Evidence of improved outcomes for learners and educators
Scalability: Practical application in varied contexts
Child-Centredness: Clear alignment with learner agency, engagement, and holistic development
From over 200 submissions globally, only ten innovations were chosen — and we are deeply honoured that P-BLOT is among them.
Why This Matters
At Longworth Education, our work is grounded in a belief that learning happens best when it is driven by curiosity, supported by trust, and centred in authentic relationships. Recognition like this helps shift the narrative — from viewing play as an “extra” to understanding it as a powerful pedagogical approach that enables deep, meaningful learning.
This acknowledgement also affirms what many teachers already know: that teaching through play is both complex and profoundly impactful.
Thank You to Our Community
We want to acknowledge the many kaiako, school leaders, and whānau who have contributed to and supported the development of the P-BLOT. Your insight, feedback, and trust continue to shape its evolution.
This recognition belongs to the wider Longworth Education whānau — a network of educators committed to doing what’s best for learners.
